Blackstone are basically a commercial military. They are a mercenary company that become the sole military power of Stars End (Tanzenda) a sub that Ozy and I worked on.

An excerpt from Stars End is here:

Quote:

After the Formation of the Macedonian Confederation, Stars End officially established itself as an independent entity; open to all, but intolerant of race or creed based violence within its purview. Edgar Wellington realized that they needed a way to defend them and keep the peace. In order to accomplish this they created a company of mercenaries known as the Blackstone Division. Blackstone provided the muscle needed to maintain order, and in exchange Tazenda provided them with a safe haven and funding.

Archives Link: http://scifi-worlds.com/archives/index.php?title=Stars_End

So imagine a mercenary company, with a permanent contract to defend stars end. The squad of soldiers from the various Harkani stories are from Blackstone. So they would probably find themselves on a ship like this fairly often, perhaps even have one that they use all the time. Which would allow some interesting stories and cross overs I think.

The Beagle was because of the recon, scent chasing, nature of the ship. Happy to change the name if you think it is inappropriate or should be something more fitting to the setting.

What I am thinking is that the Beagle captains are almost independent entities. They are given a ship, customized to their specifications, in exchange for a certain period of time that they must serve Blackstone when required. Either that or a debt based contract.

Debt based contracts mean that the crew need to pay off the debt of the ship, each mission is given a value that it reduces the debt by, with additional payments being optional. If no missions come from Blackstone then they are free to do almost whatever they like. Blackstone will pay for any information they retrieve on their own, from independent spy activities or any other means. I think this has been done before in Scifi, the B&B ships from the ship who sang universe spring to mind. Though I cannot remember if they are exactly the same as this or what the deal is.

Open to thoughts on which of those is better.

Part of the deal would be that no knowledge of Blackstone can make it to outside parties, and none of the technological equipment that is unique to Blackstone can ever be discovered by someone else. So all ships are fitted with various self-destruct devices that will cripple sections of the ship or destroy it completely.

I am still tossing up about who would be considered eligible for captaining a Beagle. If it is only members of Blackstone that go through training and eventually make their way to that point, or if they are open to anyone who can prove they might be capable, or both.

I was thinking of fleshing out a particular area and getting some stories and stuff done in it. Since I have some stuff around it done already I thought that working on Stars End and getting some stories done around Blackstone would be a way to get some smaller subs in.

How does the name "Beagle" apply to the ship?

Is the Blackstone group made of various species? Are they military? I was just reading up on the BICE submission, and trying to put everything together. Are they just a corporation that produces for anybody with a few bits.

The mobile versions seem to be wokring correctly. I do need to work on theme colors a bit, and make sure the links are correct. Let me know if you've used it, and would appreciate any feedback.

Mass producing an identical looking cargo ship is one aspect of its cover, so you can pretend you are just a normal merchant or taxi or something.

Quote:

When you say individually designed, do you mean the inside of the ships can differ greatly, but the outsides all look identical?

Yes. I am thinking of creating the crews of these ships as working in a type of bondage to get their ship. If they serve for a minimum amount of time then the ship becomes the property of the captain and the crew can stay with him, or something like that. So the crews get to customize the electronics, weapons, accessories, etc. But they are just customizing on the same hull design.

After that I would also expect the ships to be added to, tweaked, etc throughout their life. I was thinking of the PT boat in WWII that Kennedy was on, here is a quote from Wikipedia:

Quote:

The day before her most famous mission, PT-109 crew lashed a US Army 37 mm antitank gun to the foredeck, replacing a small, 2-man life raft. Timbers used to secure the weapon to the deck later helped save their lives when used as a float.

I think that it was common for the PT boat guys to do crazy stuff like that to get their boats ready for particular missions, and I think the same would happen on the Beagle class ships.

So I'm guessing the reason this ship does so well as a recon is because there are so many other just like it that are cargo ships?

When you say individually designed, do you mean the inside of the ships can differ greatly, but the outsides all look identical?

I'll have to read up on the Blackstone group again...it's bee a while.

[Brainstorming ships] Beagle Class

Post subject: Beagle Class

This is a ship I have been working on for the Blackstone Corporation. Basically I am going to develop it into a specialised recon ship.

What I plan on doing is have the members of this class of ship be fairly unique, so each ship is individually designed by the crew before manufacture. As long as the ship appears to be the same as all the other Beagle class ships.

There will also be a mass-produced cargo ship that looks exactly the same as the Beagle.

It would be Blackstones main surveillance, recon, and covert-ops insertion ship. So it wouldn't have any significant armaments. A small cargo hold would be available, probably an over-sized powerplant to handle all the electronics.

So here is a really early skeleton, just so that if anyone wants to suggest anything they can go for it :). I haven't really decided what it should look like yet either. So any suggestions could shape the final ship.

Article Title:
Author:

Beagle

Introduction:

Acknowledgments:

A short listing of those who helped contribute to this craft.

Narrative:

A short story utilizing the craft

Design History:

The Beagle started life as a covert operations and surveillance ship for the Blackstone Corporation, with its primary focus being covert observation and team insertion.

It was the creation of the Beagle and the other ships of the Hounds of War squadron that caused Blackstone corporation to expand the domain of the Tanzenda Small Arms (TZA) company into the ship construction business.
They needed a company to construct customised ships that would not give away the secrets or design of the ship to foreign nations or competing security companies.

Ships Systems:

Engineering

List the powerplant of the craft and any information regarding it you care too. Most powerplants are designed specifically for a class of ship, and often listed by the Megawattage it can put out.

Combat Systems

The Beagle class ship has 2 single anti-personel lasers to help defend it during insertions.

Electronics

Over-powered sensors, stealth systems, long stay life support (indeffinate ideally), no ship-to-ship weapons or sensors on default model

Embarked Craft

The default model has no embarked craft, but some specific ships have been customised with a single drop-pod capable of inserting a team from orbit.

Misc

Service History

(Pathfinder or Lead Ship)

List a narrative description of this ships history. It can include notable engagements, treaties negotiated, colonies founded, or if it is a more mundane craft, it can be a simple narrative listing of this crafts accomplishments.

(Other Ships)

You can also list the notable accomplishments of other craft of this class, if any. Usually, it is good to list the last, or most recent vessel of the class.

Statistics

Beagle

Design Date: (year)
Pathfinder Launched: (year)
Fleets in Service: Blackstone
Number in Service: (list the total number, if possible list them by name)

Dimensions

Crew:
Captain
XO
Navcom
Engineering
Sensors

Passengers: 5 enough for a single blackstone covert squad
Length: (the overall length of the craft)
Draft: (the overall draft or height of the craft)
Beam: (the overall beam or width of the craft)
Cargo Capacity: (measured in meters cubed; m^3)
Mass: (measured in kilograms, for large numbers use scientific notation; 1.45 x 10^9 kg)

Performance

Speed - Cruise: (should be at most 75% of the Max speed)
Speed - Max: (The modern absolute maximum is 225c, but most of the “fast” ships cap out at 175c)
Powerplant: (take the numbers from above, simple)
Emergency Power: (length of time they can last on emergency power)

Armament

2x Anti-Personel Weapon: (ordinance load; the number of rounds this weapons has)
(amount, for static armour, usually in centimeters) (defense): (for shields list effective range, usually no more than 100 meters)

Sensors and Electronics

(list the systems discussed above)

I've added a new term to the Scifi Terms page. The term is "Pocket Universe"... check it out here:

archives/index.php?title=Techman:Scifi_Terms

These are easy to do.....within 10 minutes you could create an article for this page. Let's join together and make this the biggest scifi-terms page on the net. If you have an idea, brainstorm it in the Tech Manual forum.

Hey all,

Been working on a mobile version for the Archives. Check it out below. For right now, it's just the Archives...which will benefit our readers much. Later, perhaps I could try to do something for the forums.

http://mobile.scifi-worlds.com/archives ... =Main_Page

[Brainstorming groups (guilds, governments, troop types, etc.)] The Centauri Trinary Republic

Author: JcFarnham
Post subject: The Centauri Trinary Republic
Posted: Tue Jan 24, 2012 6:13 pm

The easiest thing to start off with would be a preliminary history and my admittedly lacking notes on the Republics overall structure and workings. I know a lot is missing but I will post more as I type it, or rather, when I've pinned down my many ideas. One thing I would like to persue with the CTR is a culturally Asian feel, assuming of course a signifact number of settlers with such a heritage can be logically drawn from some where in Human Space.

Misc [for now]

The Centauri Trinary Republic has its roots amongst a series pacts and treaties. Specifically these are the Centauri Technological Pact [the CTP], The Kiniha Accords and The Unification Act of the Republic along with a borrowed number of Terran Union[?] Acts carried over from the Republic's founding Human cohort. The CTR is based upon the theoretical workings of a Technocracy, but has strong Oligarchic tendencies with the people in charge of those with the knowledge and skill taking the majority of governmental seats.

The Head of State is technically an Elected Monarch, chosen as a “public face” from amongst those the House considers high profile enough. Whilst the Monarch has some sway, typically being a person of charisma, charm, and experience, the final say on legislation usual falls to the Elected House.

History
2333 - First contact between the Humans and the Centauri...they are less advanced, none to very limited space travel.

2601 - Alpha Centauri settlement started...5000 Humans sent (3rd planet no intelligent life).

2620 – Small dealings of technology between the Humans and Centauri leads to a Technological Pact which allows the sharing of all scientific endeavours. By the end of the century, this has brought the natives in line with Human advancements but not without a great deal of struggle and effort.

2650 – First contact with the Marani, who having limited stellar travel, have sent a ship from their territories into the Alpha Centauri B system for exploratory purposes (or more or less because they can).

2875 – In the wake of the Compact of Interstellar Independence, the Marani, the Centauri and the Human settlers extend their technological pact and begin to form the foundations of a systems government culminating in early drafts of the Unification Act of the Republic (though the Act won't be passed for some time to come).

2880 - Civil war breaks out. On one side are those in favour of the republic (the Unificationists) and those against (the Seperatists).

2900 - The Unificationist forces defeat the Seperatists at the Battle of Proxima. Despite heavy losses the Seperatists do not back down.

2910 - Signing of the Kiniha Accords brings an end to the civil war. A Unificationist majority comes out on top of the interim governing body and in secret the "Seperatist threat" is pushed underground. This marks an uneasy period in Centaurian history, but by the 2950s the Trinary system is enjoying some sembalance of peace with a great majority of small copy-cat Seperatist uprisings quelled peacefully.

2953 – During the Great War [or which ever is in its place right now?], Marani and Centauri from across the Trinary System join forces with their “Human brothers” in a purely defensive manoeuvre. Proving their combined strength of will, and success in defending their home systems.

2956 – The Unification Act is finally complete, signed and passed by majority marking the true start of the Republic. By this time the Centauri Civil War is spoken of with only embarrassment and what's left of both sides seem to have reconciled.

3000-20 – By this point in the fledgling polities history, a strong oligarchic trend has formed within the Elected House. This group are predictably those who signed the constitution and the military beneath them. A sigificant number of acts of civil unrest are perpetrated in the decades to come and are eventually pinned on an terrorist organisation calling themselves the Centaurian Underground. Clearly the Seperatist movement of over a century ago never really disbanded, only grew smarter and more secretive, looking to break down the system from within.

3173 - Systems on the extreme edge of the Bubble in Outlander and Galaren space begin to grow silent (no one knows it’s the Hixoe). [I intend to include the Republic's involvement in this little scuffle, but this ultimately needs to be discussed thoroughly before anything is set in stone, as I'm not 100% on its ins and outs as of yet and where a small political entity like the CTR could fit in, if at all.]

I'm going to go through that list and count how many of those are directly Armark-related at some point.

I'm just irritated that the Steelers had to lose. Not out of personal interest in football, but the fact that my Latin teacher is possibly the biggest Steelers fan I have ever met. I barely avoided not having a test that monday after they lost, and i'm convinced that he's still upset.

Sorry about my inactivity recently. I haven't exactly been doing well in school, and i've been trying to change that, and the first step of that was to lower time spent using the internet. I've also been thinking on a lot of things, and a large portion of my creative mind has been taken up with the very, very, VERY early development of the basis and background for a game that an IRL friend and I intend on making once we have experience in that sort of thing. Right now, it's just ideas for lore and gameplay mechanics, but it'll get somewhere eventually.

Now, that being said, I haven't had that much time to think of major things for this, but this is definitely the project that I want to finish up next (I also want to wrap up Relic some time. We need small things like that to make this more interesting). So, for the districts, I was thinking that each area would have a certain varied aesthetic and architectural style associated with it, coming from the days when the Armark were a fractured species of a multitude of small tribes. i was thinking that there would be various villages in the area that is now Tendriin, much as there were multiple villages around the seven hills of Rome. For the Mercantile District, I was thinking something similar to modern-day cities, like New York or Los Angeles. Ulavilaan would be something similar to Brookhaven National Labs on long island. The Fennitian district would feature rounded, gleaming white towers, with smooth, curved surfaces, multiple variances in shape, and windows that look white from the outside, but provide a clear view of the city below from inside. Whichever area I decide is going to be the poor housing district is going to be something similar to a lot of Istanbul or Izmir (both of which i've been to). The buildings will be mostly concrete or stone, packed together tightly, and with a generally uniform color of roof. In the case of the two Turkish cities, it was red, but I don't know what color i'd put the district as. I don't have any concrete ideas for middle and upper-class housing districts yet, nor do I for the waterfront.

Also, Skyways. There is a network of Skyways connecting almost every large building in the Mercantile and Waterfront districts together, providing a smooth network of pedestrian travel in the city, much like in Minneapolis today.

I think the Avani are almost done, they just need some more narrative introductions and such to make it easier to get into. So we should be able to get them finished reasonably quickly.

Personally I would really like to see the outlander alliance fleshed out. It appears to me like it could be the old west of the sector, with heaps of small factions, planets, stations, etc. So it is a really appealing location for stories, games, etc.

But I have a heap of other stuff that is half finished as well :).

Howdy

A while back Ozy and I done some combined work on some subs, Stars End springs to mind. If I remember correctly much of that was done in a multi-user online notepad called Etherpad.

I just saw a post saying that Ehterpad had been taken down, but a fork of it was still running at http://piratepad.net/front-page/.

It worked great back when we used it last, hopefully it still does.

That works for me. The Centaurians is definitely a needed write-up. There is currently a thread started for them...that might be a good place to take over. I was originally going to do the write-up for them, but you're welcome to it. One thing to remember is to make sure the Centarians fit within existing content. Below is a list of completed works about this species. One thing we try to avoid is going back and adjusting completed work because we have a new idea about how things should be.

It would also be good for you to start a thread in the Current Projects forum.

The skinmoss submission deals with the first contact between Humans and Centaurians.
archives/index.php?title=Skinmoss

The Harz submission speaks briefly about the Centaurian Underground.....a terrorist type group.
archives/index.php?title=Harz

The Sol submission briefly mentions the Centaurians.
archives/index.php?title=Sol

Since I haven't been here for a while I just thought I should up date you all.

I'm still laying claim to the Centaurians, or at least their government and such, while scrapping the KCC. I think it might be best [for me mainly] if I have a new thread to get things seperated in my head, of course that is a matter that needs to be talked about. Sound okay?

If anyone has had any thoughts about Centauri Trinary System in my absense I'd like to hear them. I'm always open for collab/co-author.

There's a lot of work that needed done on my end here on the forums. Since reopening the forums, I've been trying to catch up. One of the things I had let lapse is the promotion of members. Wanted to throw this question out there from a perspective of what is requested in the Archives. A requested article in the wiki is one that is red, and below is a list of what articles have been requested. Check these out, and perhaps you can choose one of these. Some of these have already been spoken for....so ask before starting. For example Humans are the most requested...and I'm currently working on them. Actually I'm working on the top 3.

Human ‎(14 links)
Earth ‎(10 links)
Mars ‎(7 links)
Esoi ‎(7 links)
FTL Travel ‎(5 links)
Centaurian Underground ‎(4 links)
Alpha Centauri A ‎(4 links)
Avani ‎(4 links)
Terran Union ‎(4 links)
Centaurian ‎(4 links)
Outlander Alliance ‎(3 links)
Hixoe ‎(2 links)
Solarian League ‎(2 links)
Feedback ‎(2 links)
Ptolemy ‎(2 links)
Harkani ‎(2 links)
The Fennitt Tribe ‎(1 link)
Luna ‎(1 link)
Taysets Amroury ‎(1 link)
Baryonic armor ‎(1 link)
The Razorwall ‎(1 link)
Neopolis ‎(1 link)
P5 Viper ‎(1 link)
Dark matter ‎(1 link)
The Xyliad ‎(1 link)
Procyon ‎(1 link)
Korelaan Military Base ‎(1 link)
Lightfire union ‎(1 link)
Ulmegatrus A ‎(1 link)
Human Imperium ‎(1 link)
Planet Korelaan ‎(1 link)
Ulmegatrus B ‎(1 link)
Spider Technology ‎(1 link)
Chiimo Ukka ‎(1 link)
Ley Torian ‎(1 link)
Radik Teivuur ‎(1 link)
61 Cygni ‎(1 link)
Valiack System ‎(1 link)
Techman:Light Year ‎(1 link)
Craduul Korelaan ‎(1 link)
Relic ‎(1 link)
Almach ‎(1 link)
Yytorid Korelaan ‎(1 link)
Techman:Red Dwarf ‎(1 link)
Ere W sigo ‎(1 link)
Tendriin Teivuur ‎(1 link)
Arcadia ‎(1 link)
Techman:Betelgeuse ‎(1 link)
Sol Net ‎(1 link)
The Arkain ‎(1 link)
Eltanin ‎(1 link)
Avarkan ‎(1 link)
Techman:Rigel ‎(1 link)
GSPN ‎(1 link)
The Crimson Army ‎(1 link)
Fiboe ‎(1 link)
Gog Ahn tn ‎(1 link)
Wolf 359 ‎(1 link)
The Fennitt Government ‎(1 link)
Gemma ‎(1 link)
H Railix ‎(1 link)
Husoi League ‎(1 link)

Anybody still living? It's time to break open the cryo=tubes and wake up. You might be a little groggy at first, but once you eat and walk around a bit you'll feel much better.

Anybody want to take a guess when we will hit 200,000 cycles? A cycle in the Prime world is 11 minutes...the time it takes Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, to make one full rotation.

Haha, yeah.

Though it did freak me out when... I guess it was a year or two ago. Scientists think there is a very large gas giant beyond the oort cloud and that's what pushes the comets in... It's freaky because perhaps the most outlandish of the 2012 disaster theories is a huge gas giant from the depths of the system coming in and taking us out. I always laughed at it but, well, it might exist now xD

I think the deadline for that disaster is over though. I'd figure the time it would take for a planet to drift from that far out to hit us would take multiple years, and it would get in visual range pretty quickly - and it obviously hasn't.

Still - it's curious that such a planet could possibly exist. A true planet X (disgarding the lame Plutonians). Might be a good location for a sci-fi story or RP perhaps?

Hey guys.... I added the <ref> tag to the archives for use in the Tech Manual. This will make it a little easier to cite our works.

The idea behind the Tech Manual is to create a well written, well documented source for contributors to use as they research real technologies behind their sci-fi submissions. My Goal is to have this the top site on the web to look up this type of info. We've a ways to go, but there it is.

Lance, do you want to put your word 'subspace' into the Tech manual format, then we can move it to the Archives once we all agree upon it? See the examples on the page below.

archives/index.php?title=Techman:Scifi_Terms
